Resistive,Capacitive and IPS touchscreens on tablet PCs

If you're planning to take the plunge and purchase a tablet PC, you'll should be aware that there are mainly two types of technology used in touchscreen tablet PCs - resistive and capacitive.Actually ips touch screen also belongs to capacitive, cause it used in many tablets as well,so we have a introduction about it here as well.

What is a resistive touchscreen?
Resistive touchscreens work on the basis of pressure applied to the screen. A resistive screen consists of a number of layers. When the screen is pressed, the outer later is pushed onto the next layer - the technology senses that pressure is being applied and registers input. Resistive touchscreens are versatile as they can be operated with a finger, a fingernail, a stylus or any other object.
Resistive touchscreen can be usually touched with one finger only, some ones would also support 2 fingers(2-point touch).

What is a capacitive touchscreen?
Capacitive touchscreens work by sensing the conductive properties of an object, usually the skin on your fingertip. A capacitive screen on a tablet PC usually has a glass face and doesn't rely on pressure. This makes it more responsive than a resistive screen when it comes to gestures such as swiping and pinching. Capacitive touchscreens can only be touched with a finger, and will not respond to touches with a regular stylus, gloves or most other objects.
Capacitive touchscreen can be usually touched around 5 fingers(5-point-touch) at the same time, some even supports 10-point-touch.That means we can pinch the pictures or web pages to make it zoom in and out.

Though resistive touchscreens are often quite responsive - especially in many new tablet PC hitting the market - capacitive touchscreens usually provide a more pleasant user experience. Actions like swiping through contact lists, zooming in and out of Web pages and maps, typing e-mails and text messages and scrolling through photos are best suited to capacitive touchscreens;unlike resistive screens, you can swipe across them gently and still get a response. Resistive screens are often found in cheaper devices, as they cost significantly less to manufacture.

However,it is the way we  use the tablet decide which one we choose. If you are more familiar to use fingernail or object to operate, then you can try resistive one.If you are more familiar with gentle touch or the experience in iPhone etc, then you need a capacitive one.

What is IPS techonolgy?
IPS panel matrices differ from TN film panels not only in the structure of the crystals but also in the placement of the electrodes; both electrodes are on one wafer and take more space than electrodes of TN matrices. This leads to a lower contrast and brightness of the matrix.IPS panels employ pairs of electrodes at the sides of each cell, running the electric field horizontally through the material. This approach keeps the liquid crystals parallel to the front of the panel, increasing viewing angle. The disadvantages of this technology are that response times suffer and production of the panel can be very expensive.Super-IPS was later introduced with improved response times and color reproduction.

Advantages of IPS touchscreen?
  • IPS touchscreen have quick response times and homogeneous response time in any gray of liquid crystal and the optimal structure to proceed a large number of high speed signals without data loss by using copper wiring with low resistance values. So IPS touchscreens offer a vivid and clear picture, stable response time of liquid crystal, and its smart driving technology.
  • IPS touchscreen display consistent and accurate color from all viewing angles. Other panels may only display partial true color. The discrepancy is normally more than 2 times in terms of color shift. IPS panels are twenty times better[citation needed] than normal[clarification needed] panels in comparative changes in gamma shift.
  • IPS panels do not lighten and show tailing when touched, making them ideal for touchscreens.

If you have any doubt about the touchscreen, please don't hesitate to let us know.
